May Meeting - Gilbert Airpark (SC45) - 5/19/19

We had another great meeting on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Ron Angerman's hangar at Gilbert International Airpark (SC45). Everyone had a great time socializing before and during lunch, which featured Italian food of pizza and lasagne, along with tossed salads, several delicious desserts, tea, and other beverages beginning at 1:00pm. It was a nice day, so several aviators/planes flew in.
Then, President, Randy Berry, held a business meeting beginning about 2:00pm. Randy thanked Ron Angerman for again hosting our meeting. Everyone loves meeting at Ron's nice hangar, which we have dubbed the "Taj-mahangar". He also recognized several individuals who work consistently each month to make our luncheons a success. They are Debbie Philbin, Libby Berry, and Glenn and Kelsie Temples. He also thanked other members who occasionally bring food items, including Tony Gantt and Jim Streeter providing additional pizzas today. Further, we appreciate all of your donations so that we can continue having these luncheons. The April meeting minutes were approved unanimously, and Treasurer, Libby Berry, gave a financial report indicating our treasury is still very healthy, and remaining fairly stable.
In recent events, Randy and Denise Bryan spoke about the Fairfield County Wings and Wheels event at Fairfield County Airport (KFWD) on Saturday, May 11th. Although the threatening weather with Sigmets to the west and an Airmet beginning at about KFWD toward the northeast kept some aviators/planes away, the event was very successful and well attended, especially by local residents. It featured a car show, craft and other exhibits, helicopter rides by JAARS, RC aircraft, food vendors, and a nearby train ride.
Larry and Debbie Philbin attended the AOPA Fly-in at Frederick, Maryland (KFDK) on Friday, May 10th and Saturday, May 11th, so Larry gave us a brief presentation on the highlights of that event complete with background photos on our TTF TV. They were also impressed by a gentleman who is in the process of rebuilding an immaculate Piper J3 Cub.
Randy then made a presentation on EAA's recently introduced "10-step Chapter Recognition" program. Essentially, EAA chapters can earn 1 point based on each of 10 main criteria for a total of up to 10 points. Chapters who achieve 7 or more points get national recognition from EAA. Further, they receive "bronze" level recognition for achieving 7 points, "silver" level for 8 points, and "gold" level for 9-10 points. Our chapter currently has 4 points to our credit, and we feel that we should be given credit in another category for a total of 5. We also believe that we have a chance to achieve at least 7 points for bronze level recognition in the future.
Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, June 23rd, again at Ron's hangar at SC45. Details will be available in the EVENTS page about a week or so prior to that meeting. April Meeting - Gilbert Airpark (SC45) - 4/28/19

Our April meeting was held on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Ron Angerman's hangar at Gilbert International Airpark (SC45). Everyone had a great time socializing and eating hotdogs starting about 1:00pm until around 2:00pm. Several members arrived early. We didn't count the number of members and guests, but we'd guess perhaps 50 were in attendance. The winds were a bit brisk at 15 mph gusting to 21mph, so only a few brave and hearty pilots flew in. The rest drove in, but that's ok. We believe in flying safely.
We held our business meeting starting just after 2:00pm. We began by thanking Ron Angerman for hosting the meeting and the use of his very nice hangar. Ron even set up all the tables and chairs for the meeting. We also thanked Jim Streeter, and his son, David, for providing a nice "Hot Dog Bar" complete with the best ingredients and all the trimmings. Also, thanks to everyone else who brought and contributed food items and those who contributed your donations generously We approved the minutes for March 17th, which had previously been posted on this website. Then, Libby gave a financial report which indicates that our chapter financial condition is very sound indeed. Several members gave reports on their recent trip to the Sun-N-Fun Flyin held at Lakeland-Linder Airport (KLAL) during the week of April 2-7, 2019.
Randy attended an EAA leadership seminar at Sun-N-Fun and reported on several EAA intiatives, including a 10-step program by which EAA chapters may earn points, automation of the Young Eagles reporting process, a "Flying Start" program, and assistance in starting "Flying Clubs". You can find more information about those programs at www.EAA.org. Libby read a touching card from Myra Strock regarding the flowers our chapter sent to Leon's funeral. Larry Philbin commented about a Cub Scout pack who came to Lexington County Airport the previous day and were so excited to meet and chat with some Army Apache pilots who had landed there. We briefly discussed the prospect of restarting our Young Eagles program at some point.
In new business, we decided to hold the May meeting on Sunday, May 19th. Ron Angerman offered to again host our May meeting at his hangar at Gilbert Airpark, and the chapter vigorously accepted his invitation. We're planning to have pizza, salad, beverages, desserts and other supporting food items. We then closed our chapter meeting and walked across the runway to visit Sam and Penny Giltner's recently constructed hangar. Sam gave us a "talk" on his very nice motorized sailplane. Sam is a very experienced pilot has been flying sailplanes and other aircraft for over 50 years, He had just returned from a week long saiplane meet at Perry International Airport (SC95) attended by pilots from all across the USA. Members asked Sam many questions about his sailplane, his experience, and soaring in general. Thank you, Sam, Penny, and son, Joe, for being such great hosts. March Meeting - Pond Branch Airport (PBA) - 3/17/19

Our March meeting was held on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Eddie and Sandy Price's Pond Branch Airfield (PBA). We enjoyed a bountiful and varied lunch of Beaufort Stew, hamburgers on the grill, and roasted oysters, along with a variety of delicious salads, rolls, slaw, vegetables, desserts and beverages. We served over 60 members and guests. Eleven planes flew in for the event. After everyone had eaten, we held a brief business meeting. President, Randy Berry, noted that we lost a valuable and beloved member and Treasurer of our chapter, Leon Strock, on March 9th, 2019. He then asked that we observe a minute of silence and prayer for Leon. Randy noted that if Leon were still on Earth, he'd have been right there with us today. Unfortunately, since Leon is gone, we found it necessary to elect another treasurer. Libby Berry was the only one nominated for the position, so she was unanimously voted as our Treasurer for the remainder of 2019. Randy also noted that the Sun-N-Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Florida is coming up April 2 -7. Several members plan to attend. Randy also reminded everyone that ADS-B Out will be required to enter any controlled airspace beginning January 1st. 2020, only about 9 1/2 months away. He then asked those attending if they had fun and enough to eat to which all gave an enthusiastic "YES". The meeting was then adjourned.
