June Meeting - Pelion Airport - 6/4/2017

George Sellers, Sgt. David Nieves & Murray Sellers Discussing Young Eagles

Our June meeting was held at the EMT substation conference room at Pelion Airport (6J0) on June 4th. We had a wonderful meal with plenty of food and desserts provided by members starting around 1:00pm. Thanks to all those who provided food items and to David Nieves for coordinating the meeting location for us. We welcomed new member, Ron Mowery, who is originally from Ohio and is now retired. He and wife, Cyndi, now reside at Gilbert Airpark. Bo Fender of Whiteplains Airpark also renewed again for 2017.

The main topic at our business meeting was the upcoming Young Eagles event planned for sometime in September. Our Young Eagles coordinators, George and Murray Sellers, gave us an overview of what they are planning for the event. They stated that we need at least 8 pilots and 18-20 assistants, so they circulated a list on which members may "sign up" for the event. They encouraged all members to go through the "Young Eagle protection validation process". Murray stated that it only takes about 10 minutes to complete. They'll be giving further updates at future meetings.

In other news, Randy mentioned upcoming events at Triple Tree Aerodrome and Greenwood Municipal Airport on June 10th. He also said that we got off our normal "third Sunday of the month" schedule somewhat in April, May and June due to bad weather and holidays, but we plan to get back on our normal schedule in July, which is planned for Sunday, July 16th, 2017. The meeting will again likely be held at Pelion Airport. The EMT substation conference room is an excellent meeting facility with air conditioning, WIFI, video equipment, adequate seating and tables for members, and, of course, the 4200' runway and airport facilties nearby.

After the meeting, Safety Advisor, Don Schmotzer showed us a video via YouTube and WIFI on "fire in the cockpit" and discussed what our reactions should be in different scenarios. For photos from Eddie Price, click on the photo above.

April/May Meeting - Gilbert International Airport - 5/7/2017

George & Randy Frying Fish & French Fries

Our April meeting planned April 23rd was postponed until Sunday, May 7th, due to bad weather. It was held at Ron Angerman's hangar at Gilbert International Airpark (GIA - SC45). Thankfully, the weather was ideal on this date. We had a fish fry for lunch and a business meeting afterwards. Aircraft began arriving around 11:45am. Randy Berry, George Sellers, Murray Sellers, and Libby Berry began cooking the Whiting filets and french fries around noon. Thanks to Ron, Randy, Dave Hardy, and Neil Deye for providing equipment. Later, Don Schmotzer cooked onion rings in a fryer which he brought. TTF and GIA members brought various delicious food items, including baked beans, salads, desserts, hushpuppies, tea, and soft drinks. We started eating about 1:00pm. We counted 58 people and 12 aircraft.

After lunch, we held a business meeting starting around 2:30pm. President, Randy Berry, welcomed everyone and thanked Ron Angerman for allowing us to hold our chapter meeting in his nice, big hangar. He also thanked GIA for their assistance and cooperation. We had a minute of silent prayer for recently deceased TTF member, Pelham Moss. Our sincere condolences go to Pelham's wife, Donna, and his family. Our chapter voted to send a donation in Pelham's honor to a charity which his wife suggested in lieu of flowers. We also voted to dedicate our fall chapter fly-in in honor of Pelham. Pelham was a great and talented guy with a great sense of humor. We shall indeed all miss him. He had almost finished the ONEX aircraft which he had been constructing for the past several years, but never got a chance to fly it.

We voted to approve the minutes of our March 19th meeting at Pond Branch Airport. Libby reported that she had completed the required IRS "tax exempt" online filing for this year. Attendees were generous with their donations of food and money, and Libby also reported that they had donated ample money to cover the cost of the fish and other food purchased by the chapter. The surplus will go into our TTF treasury. Randy reported on the Sun-N-Fun trip that he, Tony Gantt, Larry Maner, and Leon Strock made in April. He had a slideshow of 600+ photos running on a projector in the background during the event. We further discussed the new BasicMed medical which took effect on May 1st. Randy completed his BasicMed medical this past week and Kevin and several others plan to pursue theirs later. George and Murray Sellers reported that they've attended several other chapter Young Eagle events to learn more about their new duties as our Young Eagles coordinators. They are currently planning a Young Eagles event sometime in late September and stressed that pilots need to pass the EAA validation for carrying Young Eagles. We may even have a session at a future meeting to allow pilots to qualify. They will also need volunteers for ground based duties helping with the kids and filling out forms. They've also flown to luncheons with another group and plan to take future trips on which they will invite us to go too. Randy announced that since we postponed the April meeting and held it today, we will NOT hold another meeting in May. Our next meeting will be in June at Pelion Airport (6J0). Randy reminded everyone to pay chapter dues, if they have not already done so. He also reminded everyone that this year's fall fly-in is planned for Saturday, November 4th at Gilbert International Airpark at Ron's hangar with an alternate (rain) date of Saturday, November 11th.

Safety Advisor, Don Schmotzer, made an interesting presentation on "go arounds" near the end of the meeting. The key is to plan ahead and initiate the go-around before early, before you're committed. The basic message was, don't try to salvage and force a bad landing ... just go around. The meeting was then adjourned. For photos of the event by chapter photographer, Eddie Price, click on the photo image above.
