March 20, 2011 Meeting

March Meeting Officers
You can rest easy at night knowing your board is on duty ... especially "King" Joe with his crown Smiley

Sunday, March 20th, started out as a beautiful, sunny, pleasantly cool, but rather windy, day on which to hold our March meeting.  Consequently, only two members flew in: Eddie Price and David Smith. Later, clouds moved in and the wind calmed down significantly. A hamburger lunch was served. Randy and Libby brought their motorhome as a support vehicle for the event. Several members brought and donated food items: Hamburgers, lettuce, onions, cheese (Randy & Libby), buns & brownies (Phil & Sonya), soft drinks (Don Bledsoe & Joe), chips (Steve), ice & cups (Tony), banana pudding (Glenn), cake (Larry Lorenz), pickles (Joe). Other members donated cash, which went into the chapter treasury.

We held the business meeting next. Kevin gave the minutes of the February meeting, which were approved. "King" Joe gave the financial report. Then, we discussed Young Eagles (YE) to a great extent. Since we don't yet have a viable YE program, we essentially agreed to support EAA 242's program for now.  However, we will discuss this matter further at future meetings. Our YE coordinator was not in attendance, so we plan to have her comment on her recommendations at the April meeting.

Then, we planned our upcoming spring fly-in scheduled for April 9-10, 2011 with alternate dates of April 16-17. President, Randy Berry, asked for volunteers for various duties at the fly-in, and members enthusiastically volunteered. Consequently, our spring fly-in is now mostly planned. We plan to serve a lunch of both hamburgers and hotdogs with trimmings on both days on a donation basis. Official fly-in times are 9am to 5pm. We agreed that the fly-in will mostly be oriented towards pilots and EAA members, although no attendees will be turned away. We plan to invite several other EAA chapters and local aviation groups. The event is also posted in the events section of EAA's website. Click the icon below for a list of duties and volunteers.

In other business, Kevin indicated that his job and personal activities are taking a lot of his time now, so he preferred to relinquish his duties as chapter secretary. Libby agreed to serve again, and Kevin agreed to serve as her backup. The chapter voted to make Libby the new secretary effective immediately. Only Neil and Millie plan to attend Sun-n-Fun; they are both volunteers at the event. Randy is unsure if he will attend this year. We had planned to have Stan Schmotzer, current C-17 Globemaster pilot, make a presentation, but he and his dad, Don, were busy moving Stan and his wife, Kim, into their newly purchased home in Summerville, SC.      The weather for our February meeting was atypically warm with a mild wind out of the southeast. Eddie, Neil, Phil and David flew in. Jim Herpst and Tony Gantt provided members with a nice lunch of hotdogs and sauerkraut on buns along with soft drinks. After lunch, we took several group photos (see above) and tentatively planned chapter events for the upcoming year, including two fly-ins. Tentative dates are April 9-10 for the spring fly-in and November 5-6 for the fall fly-in. We'll likely have at least one chapter breakfast sometime during the summer. Several suggestions were made for presenters at future meetings. Don Schmotzer gave an informative safety presentation in which he posed several thought provoking questions about what we might do in certain circumstances.  Click the thumbnail above for photos taken by chapter photographer, Eddie Price.

In addition to our chapter activities, guest, Ron Sheldon of EAA Chapter 242, discussed several upcoming events planned for that chapter and invited our chapter to participate. A local foundation has purchased the B25 recovered from Lake Murray, and it will be on display on March 6th at Hamilton Owens Airport. On March 24th, Jeff Skiles,, co-pilot of the "Miracle on the Hudson" flight of 2009, will attend and actually participate in a Young Eagles flying event. Our chapter is invited to attend as qualified pilots or by bringing a young eagle to the event. Ron said that a special dinner event is being planned for the preceding Friday evening at which Jeff will hopefully speak. It will be by special invitation and a donation will likely be requested. Proceeds will go towards the B25 project.
