The Cockfield Flying Characters sponsored a fly-in on June 7- 8, 2008 at the Cockfield Aerodrome (SC60) near Lake City, SC. Seven chapter members, six planes, and one travel trailer made the trip down on Saturday, June 7th ... see photos below. The following individuals flew in (shown right to left, 3rd row, 1st photo below): Ron Lindsey (with son, Kyle), Ray Ackerman (from White Plains Airpark), Jim Herpst, Luis Rodriguez, and Don Schmotzer. Leon Strock was parked just across from the other planes and is shown in the second photo. Rodney Dowdy had an unpleasant experience earlier in the day, but he and his wife were able to drive down later.
The guys had a bit of excitement on the way down. The weather forecast was for "severe clear", but soon after the group left Pelion Corporate Airport about 8:30am, they started running into scud clouds. Then, it began to get solid below them and for a little while they were "VFR on top". Don was in the lead and made the wise decision to divert about 150 degrees back to DoLittle Field. After about 15 minutes on the ground, the cloud layer dissipated and the group was able to resume their trip. They arrived at Cockfield Aerodrome around 10:45am.
Everyone had a great time, but it was HOT,
HOT, HOT!! In fact, we think the heat got to Ron's brain ... cause he seemed to think it was gonna
rain (4th row, 1st photo)
Randy took his travel trailer, so the guys were able to enjoy some respite from
the heat under his awning (3rd row, 3rd photo) and then later, inside the travel trailer in air
conditioned comfort. Drinks were available on site, and Randy brought a cooler
full of drinks too. The Cockfield RC club served
hotdogs for lunch. About
5:00pm, the Flying Characters served a chicken bog dinner.
After a day of chatting, sweating, eating and looking at aircraft, the fliers departed Cockfield around 6:00pm for the return trip home. Rodney and his wife headed for the beach. Randy spent the night at Cockfield in his travel trailer and returned home Sunday afternoon.
